Abstract

The settlement of fortified villages on Corsica coastlines between the 13th and the 16th century is mainly due to the action ofthe Republic of Genoa. Historians nowadays agreed upon the strategic significance of these settlements, but if the theory of an agrariancolonization has no longer the consideration of researchers, the commercial dimension, and the social and economical consequences resultingfrom it is far from negligible.Among the preserved fortifications, Bonifacio is the biggest and the most ancient one. The archaeological and archives studies enable tofollow the evolution of the building complex since its foundation in the 13th century to the 20th century, when it has been reinforced by a setof blockhouses and defensive constructions part of the Maginot Line.
